Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is a stand-alone "expansion" for Far Cry 3. The info was leaked when Brazilian ratings had this game in their list.[1] The story is not canon to Far Cry 3, but gameplay mechanics stay the same.
Everything in the game is based on B-rated movie aspects from the 80's, when movies such as RamboTerminator and Robocop were very popular. This includes the art, story, and voice acting, running the gamut from neon colours to over the top voice-overs. It is intended to be a fun, campy game, but the danger is still very palpable and can result in a quick death if not taken seriously.
Those that pre-order the PC version of the game also receive a copy of the game's soundtrack.[2]

StoryEdit

The setting is in an alternative 2007, where the "apocalypse has had an apocalypse", and a Cyborg army called the "Omega Force" is trying to take over the world, or what's left of it, by trying to find a bioweapon that is hidden on a distant island. The fate of the world is in the hands of Sergeant Rex Power Colt, who is a Cyborg that came from the Toxic ashes of Vietnam War II.
Rex is out for revenge, intent on hunting down his former cyber-commanding officer, Colonel Ike Sloan. Missions range from capturing outposts (controlled by the Omega Force) and hunting wildlife; this wildlife is similar to Far Cry 3's with a more robotic, 80's feel applied to them. The island's most notable species are the Blood Dragons; gigantic, mutated Komodo Dragons that shoot lasers from their eyes.
The game starts with Rex and Lieutenant T.T. "Spider" Brown are dropped on to an unknown island in order to investigate a "black sector" threat that turns out to be Omega Farce. After infiltrating a garrison, Rex and Spider learn that Omega Farce is ran by none other than Colonel Dike Sloan, their old commanding officer. While entering the facility, it turns out to be a missile silo containing a Red Spear missile, an ICBM used to nuke Canada. However this one has been customized to contain a bio-weapon. The duo arrives at the command console and Spider attempts to hack the console, but ends up having to manually shut it down using his Cybernetics while Rex covers him against Omega Farce. Spider ultimately fails, he tells Rex that the launch is autonomous and he needs to tear out the missile's internal wiring. Rex succeeds and calls in Helodrone 7-3 for extraction, but is shot down with Rex in it. The two are captured by Sloan.

Easter Eggs and ReferencesEdit

TMNT Easter EggEdit

In one of the outposts a mission can be activated which is a clear reference to TMNT. Just watch the video to see for yourself!

Transformers referenceEdit

During the second-to-last mission, upon acquiring the Killstar Rex says "I got the touch! I got the power, Yeah!". This is a reference to the song featured in the Transformers movie by Stan Bush called "The Touch" with the phrase above as the exact lyrics.

Predator referenceEdit

In the very start of the game when you start shooting the mini-gun out of the helicopter the song "Long Tall Sally" by Little Richard will play. The same song played in the helicopter scene in Predator.

Far Cry Instincts is a video game developed and published by Ubisoft for the Xbox console. It resembles the earlier PC game Far Cry. However, the gameplay is not as open-ended as the latter. It makes up for this by including extra multiplayer modes through the Xbox Live service, alongside new abilities (feral powers) and a map creator mode which allows the users to create their own maps for multiplayer.
Ports were also planned for the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo GameCube, however, due to unknown reasons, these ports were never realised.
Far Cry Instincts was released on September 27, 2005 for Xbox and hailed as one of the system's best shooters by many gaming sites and publications. However, some gamers felt that the loss of the open-ended gameplay and the weaker AI made Instincts inferior to the PC version.
Far Cry Instincts was followed by a sequel called Far Cry Instincts: Evolution.

Plot Edit

The game follows the story of a man named Jack Carver. Carver is a former service member of the U.S. Navy, who was dishonourably discharged following a number of illegal actions. Afterwards, he set up shop in Manhattan and began supplying illegal arms to anyone and everyone, until a gang performed a hit using weapons supplied by Jack against a Mafia heir. Consequently, a price was put on his head by the Mob, and he was forced to flee the United States and settle in Micronesia.
Carver purchased a used boat from a government auction and spent his time ferrying tourists and diving clubs around the islands. Eventually, a woman named Valerie Cortezshowed up, offering a large sum of money, if Jack took her to a remote archipelago known as "Jacutan". Carver accepted, albeit with caution.
Upon arriving at Jacutan, Cortez borrowed a water scooter from Jack and headed off on her own. Unworried, Jack decided to nap until she returned. When he awoke, Carver was startled to find UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters flying around his boat. They opened fire on him, destroying his boat, and forcing him to take cover inside a nearby wrecked Japanese aircraft carrier.
At this point the player assumes control. After a brief introduction level, the player acquires a headset, and is directed by a mysterious voice who calls himself "Doyle". As it turns out, Cortez is part of the CIA, and came to rescue Doyle. Doyle had been on a mission to expose the works of a mad scientist named Dr. Krieger. Krieger, along with his right-hand man, an ex-Apartheid officer named Colonel Richard Crowe, were attempting to develop a serum that would enhance the physical abilities of man, and "unlock" hidden animal traits.
Doyle convinces Carver to find and rescue Cortez, who has been captured by Crowe and his mercenaries. While covering Cortez, Carver himself is captured by Crowe on the orders of Dr. Krieger, who noted Carver's resourcefulness and tenacity and decided he would make a good test subject. Carver is injected with the serum and is to be transported to an observation area, when he recovers prematurely and escapes, and discovers to his shock that he has new "feral abilities", such as increased speed, night vision, and a violent melee attack.
Along with the feral powers comes an implant designed to regulate the serum's effects and allows for specialized weapons to be used against Carver. Doyle tells Carver to find his way to Doyle's position, so that the implant can be removed. Along the way, Carver has to prevent a mercenary computer programmer from deciphering a pocket PC that belongs to Cortez, which would in turn blow Doyle's cover. Descending into an old World War II-era Japanese bunker to stop the decryption, Jack is cornered by the mercenaries as he attempts to escape. He retreats through an old underground mining complex and follows Doyle's instructions to the main research facility. Carver then makes his way to the facility, where he discovers the extent of Krieger's work and the mutant monsters he has created. While in the facility, Carver finds out that Crowe is gathering the mutants for an unknown purpose, and then later he finally meets with Doyle, who frees Carver from the implant. Upon having the implant removed, Jack begins to exhibit uncontrolled evolution; in game terms, the adrenaline cost for his abilities decreases and he gains the ability to carry and wield mounted weapons like the M2 Browning machine gun.
As Jack escapes the research facility, he discovers that Crowe has taken Doyle and the mutant serum, and has unleashed the mutants in a plot to betray Krieger. Jack must fight through the middle of a war between Crowe's mercenaries, the feral mutants, and an elite group of special forces under Krieger's personal command, under orders to "sanitize" Crowe's troops. Rescuing Doyle, Carver discovers that Crowe has injected himself with a quadruple dose of the serum Jack received, and without an implant. Assuming control of the "Alpha" creatures, the most powerful and intelligent mutants with abilities similar to Jack's own, Crowe has gone straight to Krieger's base of operations. Jack follows and fights his way to Dr. Krieger's mansion atop an active volcano, where he battles and defeats the physically deformed Crowe. Krieger, in a last-ditch effort to use the Alphas against Jack, realizes that they now view Jack as their leader due to his victory over Crowe. The mutants turn on Dr. Krieger and kills him, viewing him as a threat to Jack, and thus allow him to escape as the volcano erupts. Jack is able to retreat onto a Black Hawk piloted by Cortez and Doyle, who promise to pay for a new boat to replace his destroyed one; Doyle also promises that they "can do one better" and slides a metal case to Jack, who opens it and laughs cryptically at the unseen contents as the helicopter flies away.
The game includes subtle thematic elements relating to the dangers of genetic engineering and the genocide of local islanders as can be seen by the deformed creatures created by Krieger. Also, a mysterious backdrop relating to dinosaurs is revealed via in-game radios that will sometimes carry programs that discuss the history of dinosaurs and the possibility that some might still be alive. This is further developed by appearance of lizard-like animals (which resemble small dinosaurs) that reside in the jungles on the island.
The terrain in Far Cry: Instincts varies greatly. South Pacific archipelago, the landscape includes tropical rainforests, dense jungles, towering canyons, mines, swamps, and even volcanic forests.

Features Edit

The major gameplay addition to Far Cry: Instincts that was not present in the PC version is the aforementioned "Feral Ability". There is also a trap system that allows the player to create a booby trap by wrapping a spiked tree branch around nearby foliage. When an unsuspecting NPC walks by, they are killed by the branch-whip. Claymore mines are also available, and can be set up in the paths of enemies for devastating results. These traps can be employed in multiplayer as well. An interesting feature when Jack falls from heights is that he says "oh shit" before falling to his death. There is also a map editor that lets you create your own maps with plenty of things to put in it. Many vehicles, guns, buildings, trees, the ability to change the landscape (height, add water etc.), the possibilities are quite extensive for a console game. You may upload the maps and use them on Xbox Live to play against friends.

Feral Abilities Edit

The Feral Abilities at the player's disposal include:
  • Feral smell — The natural scent given off by living things is visible to Jack as an orange haze which can be used to track movement.
  • Feral vision — Allows for night vision and thermal vision.
  • Feral speed — Allows Carver to run much faster than normal.
  • Feral jump — While utilizing feral speed, allows Carver to jump great distances.
  • Feral attack — A melee attack, initiated by pressing the 'B' button when an enemy is targeted, powerful enough to send most enemies flying and refuels adrenaline.
  • Feral strength — Allows Jack to rip a mounted weapon off its post and use it in place of his current special weapon (currently held special weapon is holstered until the mounted weapon is dropped or its ammunition runs out).
  • Regeneration — Jack's health slowly recovers when he is not under attack; how fast he recovers depends on how much adrenaline remains.

Vehicles Edit

Seven vehicles are available in the game:
  • ATV
  • Humvee
  • Jetski
  • Patrol boat
  • Inflatable Boat
  • Hang-glider
  • Hovercraft

DescriptionEdit

The game begins with the player "on top of the world, right at the beginning of the game, with all the perks that go along with being the head of an elite criminal organization".[3] Like the previous two games in the series, Saints Row and Saints Row 2, the game is an open-world sandbox. Whereas the previous games charted the 3rd Street Saints' rise to power overStilwaterSaints Row: The Third charts their adventure in a new city: Steelport.
Professor Genki, a character from the Professor Genki's Super Ethical Reality Climax Activity, has served as an unofficial mascot for the game[reference?], and has two vehicles[4][5] and a weapon[6] named after him.

Plot Edit

Saints Row: The Third takes place in 2014,[7] "years after"[3] the events of Saints Row 2. With the Sons of Samedithe Ronin, and the Brotherhood of Stilwater dispersed,[8][9][10] both Dane Vogel and Julius Little dead,[11][12] and Dex gone,[13] the 3rd Street Saints have gone from a small-time gang from the Row to a household brand name in Stilwater (complete with 3rd Street Saints-branded clothes, energy drinks and Johnny Gat bobble head dolls).[3] Furthermore, with Vogel gone, the 3rd Street Saints have partnered with their former nemesis, Ultor, and have become the "Saints/Ultor Media Group", now that Eric Gryphon has firmly secured his position as Chief Executive.[14]
The game begins with the 3rd Street Saints planning to rob a bank in Stilwater.[15] After the execution of the plan goes awry (partly due to Josh Birk tripping a silent alarm), The ProtagonistShaundi, and Johnny Gat find themselves in prison, only to be bailed out by Viola and Kiki DeWynter following the orders of Phillipe Loren.
Aboard his private plane, Phillipe Loren reveals himself; it transpires that the Saints robbed a bank belonging to The Syndicate, and Loren, along with his personal assistants Viola and Kiki DeWynter; demand they turn over 66% of their assets in return for their lives. After Gat blankly refuses, a skirmish leads to Shaundi and The Protagonist escaping Loren's personal plane via parachute and heading for a new city, Steelport, beneath.[16]
Steelport is a city that was created as factories flourished with little city planning, and since has suffered from economic failure, contrasting the glamour of Stilwater. Steelport is the Syndicate's hub city, and the Saints must take Steelport from them. To extend their reach they have divided their control of the city through three gangs.Morningstar, lead by Loren directly, are typically European men and women, with impeccable taste, selling guns and handling the prostitution rings.[17][18] The Mexican wrestler Killbane controls The Luchadores who handle the drug trade and gambling.[19] The Deckers, led by hacktivist Matt Miller, are computer geniuses, and handle the money laundering.[20] As the gang war intensifies, a fourth group, the Special Tactical Anti-Gang (STAG) unit from the government attempts to halt gang activity, whether it be the 3rd Street Saints or the Syndicate.[reference?]

Gameplay Edit

The game is split into three acts, and a "major choice" is given to the player to decide during the finale of each act. There are also other "major choices" and "minor choices" given throughout the game, and these choices at the end of each act affect the outcome of the game; there are two major endings in the game.
One example of this new feature, given early on in the game, the player is given a chance to blow up a building or leave it. Destroying the building grants the player "more Respect", while leaving the building unlocks it as a Crib, which "[would be] beneficial as it's in a well-situated area of the city".[21] Ultimately this building, Syndicate Tower, is not actually a Crib, instead simply giving an hourly cash bonus if not destroyed.[22]
Another example is in the Luchadore mission "Murderbrawl" (which takes place about two thirds through the game) after beating Killbane; the player is given the choice to unmask and shame Killbane, or spare him, in which, "[Killbane] will teach [the player] the secrets of the Apoca-Fist...", melee weapons that make the target explode once hit.[23]

Sequel Edit

During an interview with X-Play, THQ executive VP Danny Bilson claimed that story details for Saints Row 4 have already been decided on. "Like any game, if you have a great creative core to it you just keep exploiting that core," he told G4. "For instance," he went on, "I know what Saints Row 4 is about and it is wilder than this one. It's a good example of how you take what you have and you ask, 'what could happen in the next?" added Bilson, without giving up any actual details.[28]

MarketingEdit

  • Competitive multiplayer is not included in Saints Row: The Third.[29][30]
  • The PlayStation 3 version of Saints Row: The Third was announced to include an exclusive mode, which was reported to have utilized the PlayStation Move,[31] but this was proved to be incorrect.[32]
    • It was later announced that instead, PS3 copies would include a digital copy of Saints Row 2 if an older online pass was redeemed.[reference?]
  • On September 13th 2011, Heyday Footwear released Saints Row-themed sneakers, named the Saints Row Super Shift Sneakers. The sneakers also feature in Saints Row: The Third and can be bought for The Protagonist to wear.[33]
  • Tomonobu Itagaki (famous for creating Dead or Alive) was revealed to be a playable character at the Tokyo Game Show 2011.[34]
  • Crooks & Castles teamed up with Volition, Inc. to make Saints Row: The Third merchandise, including a snapback hat, a wallet, denim jeans, a hoodie, a checkered shirt, a stadium jacket and some Saints Row t-shirts. These are available to buy in real life and are featured in-game for The Protagonist to wear.[35]
  • The Initiation Station was released ahead of Saints Row: The Third's release, and allows players to customize their Protagonists for free, as well as share them with the community and download those made by other players.[36]
  • In a livestream interview with Destructoid one week prior to Saints Row: The Third's release, Steve Jaros, one of the writers of the Saints Row series, cited Titus Andronicus as a prime example of something that had to be removed from the game for going "too far".[37] Titus Andronicus is a play by William Shakespeare notorious for its violence, such as cannibalism, murder, and rape, and is widely regarded as the worst of Shakespeare's written works.
  • In Team Fortress 2, three Saints Row-themed items were released to those who preordered Saints Row: The Third: the Apoca-Fists, the Mark of the Saint, and the Cold War Luchadore.

Trivia Edit

  • There are more direct references to Saints Row in SR:TT than there are in Saints Row 2.[such as?]
  • The game's story was originally going to be about an undercover cop infiltrating the 3rd Street Saints.[38]
  • Despite the heavy online integration of Saints Row: The Third, there is no online integration between different platforms. For example, it is not possible to upload a character on PC and download it on Xbox 360.
  • This is the first game where a gang has only 1 notable member/leader but this could be due to the fact that all 3 gangs are part of the 1 syndicate.
  • In May of 2012, THQ announced the development of a large expansion DLC pack for Saints Row: The Thirdentitled Enter The Dominatrix. Originally falsified information released on April Fools' Day, this major expansion pack was later confirmed to become a full-blown reality in September of that same year, and cost around $29.99. On June 20, 2012, Jason Rubin, THQ's new president, stated that he and the developers at Volition had agreed to cancel the development of Enter The Dominatrix as a standalone expansion for the third game, and instead merge its assets with the upcoming Saints Row 4.
  • Saints Row The Third is banned in the U.A.E.
